Earth Day Art Contest

Wally Waste-Not’s Art Extravaganza: Food Scraps Become Compost!

Art Time Image with earth, wally waste not, kid putting food into green cart and pile of compost with happy face and hard hat

Wally Waste-Not, our loveable mascot, was created from a student just like you!

This year, we want to revive that spirit of creativity by opening an art submission contest to encourage the Salinas Valley to separate their food scraps!

Food scraps that go into the green cart come to our facility to become compost, a natural nutrient-rich soil amendment that goes back into our gardens and agricultural fields.

We want YOU to release your creativity and create an image that captures the importance of separating food scraps into the green cart.

  1. Eligibility:
    • The contest is open to all students from TK (Transitional Kindergarten) through 12th grade in the Salinas Valley Recycles (Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority) service area.
  2. Theme:
    • Artworks must promote the importance of putting food scraps into the green cart for recycling into compost and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Art Medium:
    • Participants may use any artistic medium, including but not limited to drawing, painting, collage, or digital art.
  4. Submission Guidelines:

    • Guardian permission form must be submitted with the artwork.

    • Use little to no words – mostly visuals. The intent of the artwork will be to use on future giveaway items for Salinas Valley Recycles!
      • The initial use of the winning image will be to custom print reusable cleaning wipes (each one replaces up to 17 rolls of paper towels). The artwork will be scaled down to 6.4 x 7.5 inches. This is an example of what one of these cleaning wipes looks like (see more at swededishcloths.com):
