A Vision for Sustainable Waste Management

California state law mandates that a minimum of 50% of waste be diverted from landfills, but the SVSWA knew that we could surpass that requirement.  Monterey County already works hard to divert more than 55% of its waste. The Board of Directors recognized that a sustainable waste management solution for Salinas Valley means going above and beyond the present goals. In a bold step forward along the path to zero waste, the SVSWA opted to set the regional goal at 75% diversion by 2015.

The decision to set the bar higher than the minimum means a better future for the Salinas Valley. At the most basic level, we will be conserving resources, extending the lives of our current landfills, and reducing the impacts of landfilling on future generations.  The positive effects don’t stop there; the new practices and technologies necessary to achieve this transformation can save us money, create new jobs, and even produce new sources of energy.
